Conservation of seventeenth-century domestic wall paintings on an earthen support.
Date completed : 26 October 2018 Duration : 24 Weeks
The client uncovered wall paintings during building works. Opus worked with the client and the local conservation officer to document, analyse and undertake emergency stabilisation. This was followed by full conservation along with recommendations for display, maintenance and monitoring. The paintings date from the seventeenth century and are on an earthen support. Both paint and plaster are water sensitive. Analysis of original plasters allowed bespoke grout and fill materials to be designed. The paintings are now an attraction within the house, which is due to open as a hotel shortly.
