Shrewsbury School Benefactors Book
This project describes the work carried out to the Shrewsbury School BENEFACTORS BOOK, in use from 1596 until 1766, a unique record of the school’s early history.
Condition when received
Sprinkled calf over pulpboards. Left board leather blackened. 16th cent. boards with brass corners and plates. Previously restored 20th cent. with twin brass strips parallel to joints, nailed on securing spine leather. Outer leaves have been previously repaired and mounted and the book resewn. Later stuck-on endbands. Spine leather now rotten and lifting. left board detached.
Work carried out
Brass strips, inner corners and nails removed from boards. Previous repairs removed from boards and spine. Later pastdowns removed. Linen braided tapes attached over supports and sewn on through outer sections with linen thread. Endbands secured with gelatine glue. Spine lined with japanese tissue using starch paste, then with aero linen with joints, slotted at supports. Boards laced on. Spine rebacked with stained alum-tawed calf. inner brass plates nailed back. Linen joints put down, covered with japanese paper. New handmade paper pastedowns provided. Spine panels lettered as previously straight on using gold leaf.
