Search Rescue Dog Jacket. The Repair Shop TV
Peppers’ jacket was bought into the Repair Shop by owner and trainer Neil Powell. The jacket and collar belonged to Pepper, a much-loved border collie who qualified as a search and rescue dog at just 18 months old. Pepper helped rescue a young German boy, who had been missing for over 36 hours in terrible weather as well as being part of the team of heroic dogs involved in the Lockerbie bombing disaster rescue.
The jacket was surface cleaned to remove surface soiling before wet cleaning to remove ingrained dirt and re hydrate the fibres. Once wet cleaned the areas of loss were supported using colour matched patch support and conservation stitching. Once supported the areas were encased in dyed conservation net to hold all the loos fibres in place and add an additional layer of protection. The hook and loop tabs along the back of the jacket were sandwiched in dyed conservation net before being supported onto new hook and loop. Retaining the original but visually infilling the areas of loss. The lettering was replaced with appropriate material using the shadows of the original wording as a template. The loose fraying orange cord was secured with conservation stitching and replica neon yellow trim was added behind the reflective patches. These were stitched into place using fine polyester thread and can easily be removed, returning the jacket to its original used state if desired. A padded insert and pole was made to allow the jacket to be displayed with the collar and rescue badge.
