1870s Child’s dress from Swansea Museum
Posted: January 17, 2023A child's dress from the 1870s, part of the costume collection of Swansea Museum, was needed for display in the Museum's galleries. An attractive item, the dress was largely in sound condition apart from damage to its lace trim. A fine gauge net backing was used to support the fragmentary lace so that the garment could be safely displayed and enjoyed. -
Baldacchino from Cardinal Newman’s room, Birmingham Oratory
Posted: January 17, 2023In 2020 an extensive project was undertaken to conserve the private library, archive and study of Cardinal Newman at Birmingham Oratory. Among the objects needing conservation was a baldacchino made from silk fabric and wool fringe on a brass frame, suspended from the ceiling of the study over the altar. Posted: November 9, 2022This collection consists of drawings, designed by Henry Greenly, of six 15’’ gauge 4-4-2 locomotives, built in Rhyl by Albert Barnes & Co during the 1920s. Including additional drawings of locomotives made by Ronnie Towler and other Rhyl Amusements staff during the 1950s and 1960s. Posted: October 11, 2022This is a seventh century Bible that was found stored in a cupboard in relatively damp conditions. A condition assessment was vital in order to assess the overall condition of the volume and to establish if there was evidence of mould. There was no evidence of mould but the paper text block had traces of water damage. The text block was in fairly good condition with minor tears and creases. The sewing was intact and the cover was attached front and back. There was a tear in the joint of the endpaper but the original endpaper was still intact. -
Font of the Sacred Heart R.C. – Sittingbourne – KENT
Posted: October 10, 2022The octagonal font was made at the beginning of the xx century and it is made of Caen stone and alabaster. The entire font was precarious and it required urgent attention for safety reasons. -
Plaster-cast stations of the Cross – St Paul’s church – Haywards Heath – West Sussex
Posted: October 10, 2022The Stations of the Cross were donated to St Paul’s church by ‘the (then) local editor of The Mid Sussex Times in memory of his parents, Charles and Anne Hayden’ in 1934. They are thought to have been produced in the North of France. The main reason to undertake a conservation campaign was that heavy dirt build-ups were severely obscuring the fine elements of the bas-relief of the stations.
