Conservation of William Talbot by Sir Godfrey Kneller
The full conservation and restoration of the portrait of William Talbot by Sir Godfrey Kneller
The project involved stabilising areas of flaking paint, removing surface dirt deposits, discoloured varnish and overpaint from the portrait, making a significant lift in tone and improvement in appearance. Structurally the portrait was in fair condition.
The early eighteenth century frame was conserved by a frame conservation specialist, however the back of the frame needed significant modification in order to be able to re-fit the painting safely. The painting was re-fitted to conservation standards.
