About Me

I am preventive conservator with over 25 years experience working in historic houses, museums and galleries. I have experience across the full breadth of preventive conservation and have developed specialist interests in certain areas:

Filming and photography in heritage locations

I have a breadth and variety of experience working directly with film and television productions in heritage locations from small-scale documentaries to High End TV, commercials and feature films. I am able to provide assistance at any stage in the process of inviting a film crew to work in a heritage location from pre-planning through technical recces, staff training, physical protection measures and on-set supervision to co-ordinating post-filming documentation and learning.

I now offer bespoke training workshops for organisations wishing to learn more about the conservation aspects of filming in their own locations and I am developing a series of webinars available to individuals. For locations which entertain frequent filming requests, a Risk Assessment For Filming In Heritage Locations may be a useful process to engage in. My risk assessment process brings together stakeholders from Conservation, Collection Care, Marketing, Public Relations, Visitor Services etc to form an agreement about which areas of their estates are suitable for different filming activities and what risk management measures need to be in place for a damage-free shoot.

Integrated Pest Management

I am a steering group member of Pest Odyssey UK and have a keen interest in insect pest management for objects, museums & galleries and historic houses. I offer IPM training, advice, practical pest monitoring and identification services.

Environmental monitoring and control

My approach to environmental monitoring and control centres on making data accessible and understandable to all, both to meet statutory and best practice requirements and answer specific environmental questions. I am experienced in setting up and using a variety of environmental monitoring equipment, including the TESTO Wi-Fi monitoring system. I am able to provide one-off or ongoing environmental data reporting for my clients to meet their needs.

Light monitoring and control

I have developed innovative methods for light monitoring with limited resources across large, complex sites. I use "Light Maps" alongside other data visualisation techniques as resources to aid collection care and display decisions, particularly in buildings with variable light levels. I enjoy teaching others about light science and lighting technology, an interest which spans both my filming and environmental monitoring work.

Preventive Conservation audits

I have completed several whole property preventive conservation audits for historic buildings, museums and galleries.
