Originally the engraved prints were bound in a book, with a paper guard that from experience is firmly adhered to the print at the time of publishing and does not come off the verso.
Prints usually have been on flat framed display for decades, with guards intact on verso.
General treatments requires washing out time staining, removal from backings, removal of tapes, reduction of foxing marks and careful skilled pressing to revive plate-marks, allowing for sewing guard on verso.
